Liverpool player ratings v Sunderland; Markovic and Coutinho dazzle

We assess the performances of Liverpool's players against Sunderland today.

Simon Mignolet 6 - didn't have a great deal to do on his return to the Stadium of Light, but will be pleased to have had a quiet afternoon.

Emre Can 7 - was comfortable again in defence, and then showed his versatility by playing at wing back in the second half. Becoming an important starter for the Reds.

Martin Skrtel 6 - Liverpool's defence had a fairly comfortable day, and Skrtel was strong and sturdy without really being called upon very often.

Mamadou Sakho 6 - much the same as Skrtel, Sakho was rarely troubled but looked confident in possession as the left sided centre back.

Lazar Markovic 8 - The Serbian is growing into his role on the right hand side of this 3-4-3 formation, and after having a penalty appeal turned down, Markovic scored the only goal of the game in an impressive display. Almost made it two with an unbelievable volley from the edge of the box, but saw his shot cannon off the crossbar.

Jordan Henderson 7 - gave the Liverpool midfield much needed energy and kept things ticking over against his former club.

Lucas Leiva 7 - kept the ball really well in front of the defence in an underrated role for Liverpool. Definitely should be kept amid reported interest from Inter Milan.

Alberto Moreno 6 - fairly solid down the left but had a chance to score, only to try and check back on to his left foot and the chance was gone.

Steven Gerrard 6 - looked threatening in the first half but was taken off at the break.

Philippe Coutinho 8 - superb again, Coutinho was direct, took players on and played a defence splitting pass for Markovic before the dubious no-penalty award. If only he could finish...

Fabio Borini 6 - given a shock start against the club he was on loan with last season, Borini offered little in terms of goalscoring threat but linked play up well and will be credited with an assist for Markovic's winner.

Dejan Lovren 5 - the Liverpool defence was somewhat nervy when Lovren came on, and was booked just 10 minutes into his appearance.

Mario Balotelli 5 - saw a header go over the bar in another goalless appearance from the Italian.
