Liverpool morning update: Early team news; defender on formation change

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Liverpool

Liverpool take on Sunderland in today’s early kick-off, with the Reds currently eighth in the Premier League and the Black Cats 14th, nine points behind Brendan Rodgers’ side.

In early team news, the BBC reports that Adam Lallana is unavailable with a calf injury while Kolo Toure is now on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Liverpool are also without Jon Flanagan, Joe Allen, Glen Johnson and Brad Jones for a match they will be desperate to win having dropped two points against Leicester City in their last league encounter prior to the FA Cup third round weekend.

In other news, Liverpool defender Javier Manquillo has been speaking to the club’s official website about Rodgers’ shift in formation to 3-4-3.

Manquillo has played 17 times for Liverpool since arriving on loan from Atletico Madrid, and he told, “In Spain, I never played (a system) like that.

“But here we’ve been working hard in training to get used to the new system and for now it’s going quite well.”

Manquillo will be hoping to add to his appearance tally this afternoon, helping Liverpool to a victory in the process.
