The Queens Park Rangers midfielder says he is the 25-year-old's biggest fan but knows he still has to deliver the goods.
Austin has scored an incredible 12 Premier League goals this season, naturally leading to speculation surrounding the forward's future in west London.
Barton, however, believes Austin still has a lot to prove and doesn't see any other clubs 'taking a chance' on the 25-year-old.
“I don’t see anyone buying him. I’ve been caning him since the day he walked into the building and there is no bigger fan of Charlie than me," Barton is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.
“He might be a 20 goals-a-season striker but he hasn’t got 20 yet, has he? I think he has a lot to prove.
“Who would sign him, who would take a chance? I had a very similar situation when we got promoted at Newcastle – Andy Carroll set the world alight for six months, then Liverpool paid £35million for him and we all know how that turned out."
Just one other QPR player has scored more than one Premier League goal this season (Leroy Fer), making Austin's achievements stand out even more.
As Barton points out, though, Austin is not yet the complete striker. Many have observed that the QPR forward can work on aspects of his all-round game.
But, when it comes to finishing, there are very few that can claim to be as clinical as Austin in a one-off situation. The 25-year-old may still have plenty to prove but he has certainly given a good account of himself in the top flight thus far.
