The England international was superb at the heart of Everton's defence.
Everton needed a positive result today against Premier League champions Manchester City. They went into the game on the back of four straight league defeats but were also buoyed by the recent last-gasp draw with West Ham in the FA Cup.
Everton did indeed get the result they needed, and deserved, drawing 1-1 with City in a pulsating fixture at Goodison Park.
Steven Naismith bagged the equaliser for Everton after Fernandinho had earlier given City the lead.
There were several top performances from The Toffees today. Romelu Lukaku was tireless up front and put some of his recent critics to rest with an excellent performance. Muhammed Besic was also superb in the centre of midfield. There is a real case that when James McCarthy is fully fit it should be he and Besic who form the midfield for Everton.
But there is no doubt that the return of John Stones was massive for Everton.
The England international has been suffering with injuries this season and the likes of Antolin Alcaraz, Sylvain Distin and even captain Phil Jagielka have really struggled in the heart of Everton's defence.
But Stones came in today and once again belied his age with a composed and solid performance that gives Everton fans some hope for the rest of their season.
Here is some of the best reaction on Twitter...
