Celtic manager Deila hints at possible return for ex-Bhoys star Shaun Maloney

Celtic manager Ronny Deila has opened the door to a possible Celtic Park return for playmaker Shaun Maloney.

With his contract at Wigan expiring in just six months time, Shaun Maloney is becoming hot property in this month's transfer window.

The 31-year-old attacking midfielder has been targeted by Leicester and Queens Park Rangers this month, whilst Maloney's former Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has been linked with a reunion at Everton.

However, another reunion could be on the cards after Celtic boss Ronny Deila admitted he's a fan of the former Bhoys star.

"I am aware of all the Scottish players. He is a good player and is one we know about. He is at Wigan at the moment but we will wait and see," said Deila.

"I have seen him many times. He is a quick, creative player and is a very good person with a great mentality. He looks like a Celtic player."

Maloney joined Celtic as a 16-year-old back in 1999, and went on to make 138 appearances for the Hoops, racking up 37 goals and 56 assists before a 2007 move to Aston Villa.

Despite playing under his former Celtic boss Martin O'Neill, Maloney struggled to hold down a place in the Villa first team, and was sold back to Celtic for £3m after just 18 months at Villa Park.

Another three years at Celtic Park reaped success for the Scotland international, and Wigan Athletic swooped to take him back to England in the summer of 2011.

Since then, Maloney played a big role in Wigan's Premier League survival and FA Cup final win, and could be snapped up for just £1m this month.

With the future of Kris Commons still up in the air, Celtic may well need a creative playmaker, and Maloney would be the perfect cut-price replacement for him - and with his extensive association with the club, they could well trump Premier League clubs for his signature if Deila asks the question.
