Sunderland boss says fans won't want to miss seeing Steven Gerrard

Gus Poyet Press Conference Still

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has hailed the Liverpool captain ahead of their lunchtime clash on Saturday.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has hailed Steven Gerrard, according to quotes from BT Sport.

The Liverpool captain has agreed to join MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer, bringing an end to his career with Liverpool and in the Premier League.

That has led to a flood of praise for the midfielder, with Poyet the latest to add his thoughts on the matter ahead of the Black Cats’ home game against Liverpool on Saturday.

"He is worth buying a ticket for because there are not many like him and he is going to be missed. He is different and it is great to get the opportunity to watch him live," Poyet said.

Gerrard will now embark on a long goodbye to England, looking to help Liverpool climb back up the table following a poor start to the season.

The lunchtime game against Sunderland could be his last ever appearance in the North East, and Poyet thinks the fans should turn out to see him.

"If I was a football fan I would want to be at the stadium because I would not want to miss the chance to watch Steven Gerrard live for maybe the last time in the north east,” added the Uruguayan.

Sunderland host Liverpool looking to turn their recent run of draws in to wins as they seek to break away from the bottom three during the second half of the season, and Poyet has emphasised that desire to his players.

"Now we go into the second part (of the season) knowing we need to win more games and we need to be more clinical at home. Everything starts against Liverpool and the challenge is clear," he concluded.
