The Spanish goalkeeper signed for United on an 18-month deal yesterday.
The Spanish international has been training with the club for a number of months, as he sought to recover from a serious knee injury.
He will act as back-up and inspiration for their current number one David De Gea, who he yesterday called the 'best goalkeeper in the world'.
And the reasons behind his move are clear. Louis van Gaal would like a top class second choice stopper, after not being impressed by Anders Lindegaard or Ben Amos. Van Gaal also knows Valdes well. He gave the custodian his debut at Barcelona and was more than happy to link up with him again.
Valdes also has plenty of players he can talk to in his native tongue. Manchester United have a litany of Spanish speakers in their ranks. Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Antonio Valencia, Angel Di Maria and of course De Gea.
But Valdes has also made it clear that it was not just the Spanish speakers who made him feel welcome at Manchester United, he also had kind words for the United captain Wayne Rooney in an interview with the official Manchester United website:
"Of course, of course. I think that is the most important part for my recovery, to be with a lot of friends from the national team and speak Spanish. But also the other guys... Wayne [Rooney], the captain, was amazing with me on my first day when I came to the training ground. I cannot ask for any more, I am very grateful to the club."
United fans will now hope that Valdes settles in quickly and becomes an integrated member of the Manchester United first-team going forward.
