Chelsea v Newcastle - Match Preview, Stats & Team News

Newcastle will hope to be the first side to do the double over Chelsea this season, while the Blues will look to maintain their 100% home record in the Premier League and get their title challenge back on track.

To be played on Saturday 10th January 2015 at 15:00. Venue: Stamford Bridge, London

Odds: Chelsea 1/5, Draw 13/2, Newcastle 17/1

It has not been the best Christmas for either side as they each managed just the one win over the festive period. Chelsea will be frustrated to have allowed Manchester City to draw level with them at the top of the table after a draw against Southampton, and a humbling defeat at the hands of Tottenham - but they managed to get back to winning ways in the FA Cup against Watford to book their place in the fourth round.

John Carver is caretaker manager at Newcastle United as Alan Pardew decided to swap the Magpies for the Eagles and take up the position at his former club Crystal Palace. Carver faces a tough ask to get his first win in charge at Stamford Bridge, but will be boosted by the return of goalkeeper Tim Krul, as the visitors haven't kept a single clean sheet in the Dutchman's absence.

He is one of a number of players who they are concerned about ahead of their trip to West London, with as many as four players made unavailable for their recent FA Cup defeat to Leicester City as the festive season took its toll on the Geordies. Several of them could be available again this weekend.

Jose Mourinho, however, looks as though he will have a clean bill of health as they look to get their title challenge firmly back on track, which should bring a smile to Chelsea manager's face following an FA charge about comments he made about a supposed campaign against his club.

“What’s the secret of of Newcastle? They are a strong team. They play well, especially on the counter-attack. They killed us in the game in Newcastle because their counter-attack was amazing, so we have to be careful about that. We need to play with our qualities.”
Loïc Remy

“We've got a good record against Chelsea and we have to use that to our advantage this weekend.”
John Carver
