On this day: £6m deal agree for Defoe; Arsenal readied £1.7m for striker

On the 8th January 2014 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 8th January 2015, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 8th January 2014…

Defoe to go

A year ago today and it was reported that Jermain Defoe would be leaving Tottenham for Toronto FC. The reports claimed the Canadian side had agreed a £6 million fee with Tottenham to sign the England international.

Two days later the deal was confirmed and Defoe did make it to Toronto, staying at Tottenham until mid February on loan.

A year down the line and Defoe has returned to Tottenham. He is training with the club to maintain his fitness in the MLS off season. However he is also being linked heavily with moves to Hull City, Leicester City and Crystal Palace.

Arsenal want Morata

Arsenal were being linked with a move for several strikers a year ago today, including Real Madrid youngster Alvaro Morata. The Spanish talent was reportedly available on loan for the rest of the season, as long as Arsenal forked out £1.7 million on the striker.

Wenger preferred a loan deal last summer as he planned on bringing in a more permanent striker in the summer - which in the end happened to be Danny Welbeck.

Arsenal would have to pay the £1.7 million as part of insurance on a loan deal.

But Morata had his eyes on a summer switch to Juventus and that is exactly what he did.
