It’s not been long since Jonas Gutierrez returned to Newcastle United after being given the all-clear following treatment for testicular cancer, but the popular midfielder could now be heading for pastures new.
Gutierrez, 31, has been out of action since finishing last season on loan at Norwich, but resumed training with Newcastle last month after returning from his native Argentina, where he was undergoing treatment for his illness.
The 22-times capped international is now nearing a first-team comeback, but that event might not happen with the Magpies if Italian reports are to be believed.
According to calciomercato.it, Napoli are preparing a bid for the former Mallorca star and could land his signature for as little as €1 million, with manager Rafa Benitez looking to bolster his squad in order to remain in top-three contention.
Gutierrez’s Newcastle contract is set to expire in six months’ time, and the club could well be willing to cash in on their long-serving winger rather than see him leave for nothing come the summer.
Nevertheless, having established himself as a firm fan favourite at St James’ Park since arriving in 2008, supporters would no doubt be somewhat disappointed to see him leave the north east for Serie A.
