Angel di Maria was well aware of Wayne Rooney’s qualities before joining Manchester United, but admits the England striker is even better than he thought and is the teammate to have ‘surprised’ him the most at Old Trafford.
Having been appointed captain for club and country this season, Rooney has taken on added responsibility on and off the field.
He appears to have embraced the challenge, with the 29-year-old a talismanic figure for the Red Devils and Three Lions.
His desire to be the best and whole-hearted commitment to the cause has rubbed off on this around him, with Rooney proving that he possesses the required leadership qualities on Premier League and international stages.
Di Maria, snapped up by United in a record-breaking £59.7 million move from Real Madrid last summer, considers his skipper to be ‘incomparable’ in sporting circles, with the ex-Everton forward deserving of a standing among world football’s elite.
He told Radio America: "Rooney is an impressive player. He plays 90 minutes in every game. He is always committed, giving everything in every match.
"He has this quality, mentality and this hunger to play every game that is incomparable. He has surprised me the most, with his hunger and how he commits to every game. He is a player that deserves to be here.”

Rooney will be delighted to hear that his efforts are being recognised, with there a desire on his part to be the man that helps United back to the top.
Di Maria is among those to have been drafted in to aid him in that quest, and the Argentine playmaker has settled quickly in England.
He admits to enjoying his football at another ‘big club’ and will hope that his debut campaign delivers tangible success, with Louis van Gaal’s side pushing hard for a top-four finish and FA Cup success.
