The former Barcelona goalkeeper has signed for the Premier League giants, prompting plenty of reaction from both United and Reds supporters on Twitter
Liverpool have struggled considerably in goal this season, with Simon Mignolet being heavily criticised for his form and eventually dropped from the first team by boss Brendan Rodgers - before back-up 'keeper Brad Jones was ruled out with injury.
You would think, then, that a Champions League winning free agent would entice Rodgers and co as a potential Liverpool signing.
The Anfield side were linked with the Spaniard enough times but, surprise, surprise, the 32-year-old has been unveiled a Manchester United player.
"For me it is a pleasure to sign for Man United. It has been a hard recovery time from my injury and the first thing I want to say is thank you to Louis van Gaal for letting me work again with him and his team," the goalkeeper told Manchester United's official website upon confirmation of his signing.
"This change is very important for me because my injury was very, very hard. United and everybody around United saved me and they looked after me, so I am very grateful for everybody around the world and for the manager for giving me the chance to be a United player."
There was plenty of reaction from both Manchester United and Liverpool fans to the confirmation on Twitter. Here are some highlights!
