Newcastle United caretaker-manager John Carver has explained why Shola Ameobi has returned to the club.
Nigeria international forward Ameobi is currently a free agent after leaving Turkish club Gaziantep BB over Christmas.
The 33-year-old is struggling with injuries at the moment, which he is why he is back at Newcastle - so that he can get treatment.
“He’s came in because he’s got a problem with his ankle,” ChronicleLive quotes Carver as saying. “He knows the medical staff and knows me from way back.
“We’ve allowed him to come in and get some treatment. He’s actually talking about possibly going to the MLS. If I can help him in that then I will.”
There have been recent reports suggesting that Ameobi, who spent 14 years at Newcastle, could make a shock return to the Magpies, but Carver’s comments certainly put flight to the idea.
It seems that Ameobi wants to move to the MLS. Don’t all footballers who are ‘finished’ in Europe want to move to the USA?
