Club legend Gerrard is to leave Anfield at the close of this season, signing for MLS side LA Galaxy to close down his career.
Still impressing despite his advancing age, Liverpool’s decision to not offer him a new contract over the summer - when he confirmed he would sign one - has been chastised, and the 34-year-old will leave a gaping void in the middle of the Merseyside club’s ranks. They will not only have lost their best midfielder, but their captain and inspiration will depart, leaving Jon Flanagan as the only Mersey-born player in the first-team.
Considering how heavily his departure will be felt, it is widely expected that the Reds will go all out in the transfer market looking to secure a top class replacement for Gerrard, but, due to their status, there is a good chance they will not be able to compete with Europe’s elite for the truly world class players available.
Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal are the type of player that many would want to see as Gerrard’s replacement, but with the duo wanted by the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, Liverpool may have to settle for players a class below - and Reds legend Danny Murphy believes there are two Premier League players that should be signed to fill the void.
“Moussa Sissoko and Morgan Schneiderlin are the two players Liverpool should go for,” the 37-year-old told talkSPORT.
Newcastle man Sissoko is heavily wanted by both Arsenal and Ligue 1 club PSG, whilst Southampton star Schneiderlin is also being tracked by the Gunners, as well as North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
“Sissoko is a box-to-box midfielder,” he continued. “Who has looked absolutely terrific since going centrally. He’s only 25 and a France international. His wages aren’t going to be an issue.
“He’s going to be a brilliant signing for somebody. Sissoko’s been linked with a number of clubs in this window, so it looks like he might be on the move.”
Admittedly, Sissoko is not actually a box-to-box midfielder, with his favoured position being on the right wing, although he has excelled this season as a number 10. His defensive work leaves a lot to be desired, and Murphy believes this is where Schneiderlin can partner him in the midfield, alongside current Red - and likely captain after Gerrard - Jordan Henderson.
“Morgan can play with Sissokho, and along with Henderson, because it looks like Lucas is on his last legs.
“He’s also only 25 years old. Yes, he’s signed a new contract but you could get him out of Southampton because he’s an ambitious boy. He’s got Premier League experience and wouldn’t need time to adjust. He’s a really good player.
“Those two players will set you back around £40-50million. Liverpool would be better signing two players, rather than one. They’re already missing numbers in midfield. With Emre Can and Henderson, that gives you four there in midfield.”
The real problem with Murphy’s comments is that he is asking for Liverpool to sign two players to fix a problem created by the departure of one. There are few players like Gerrard currently playing, and, as the Reds will soon realise, replacing him will not be as easy as signing a bucketload of players.
