Tottenham Hotspur’s plans to try and sign Fabian Delph from Aston Villa this month could be wasted according to a report from Goal.com.
Tottenham have been tipped to make a £3 million offer for the England international, with his contract at Villa due to expire at the end of the month.
Spurs are apparently hoping to tempt Villa into a deal, playing on the idea that they would rather sell him for a decent fee rather than seeing him walk away for nothing at the end of the season.
However, Villa may be left with no choice because Goal’s report claims Delph wants to see out the rest of the season with the Midlands club before assessing where he goes from there.
That will offer Villa hope that they can get him committed to a new deal before the end of the campaign though it’s more likely he wants to see which of the sides linked with him is in the best position.
Tottenham face reported competition from Liverpool and there is pressure because Delph may opt to go where there’s a better choice of European football for next year.
Delph certainly can’t be criticised for an approach that many players have taken in the past and Spurs should back themselves to get into a good position where they look like an impressive proposition for any player to link up with.
The risk spurs take is that the situation may also have changed in terms of the players Mauricio Pochettino is looking for ahead of next season, meaning that they may not move on signing Delph because of interest in another target.
It also boils down to business and Aston Villa’s interests as the selling club. Delph may well have made his intentions clear but if he’s not going to stay at the club, Villa would be silly not to listen to any formal offers they receive in the next 21 days.
