Manchester United will reportedly bid £1.5million for Aston Villa centre-back Ron Vlaar this month.
The Netherlands star was tipped to follow his former international boss Louis van Gaal to Old Trafford last summer but instead remained at Villa Park. And yet with a contract that expires in June, the 29-year-old could well be sold now rather than being allowed to leave on a free transfer just a few months later.
That leads us to the latest report from the Daily Star, which suggests United are readying a £1.5million bid for the centre-back.
The report goes on to claim that while that offer is unlikely to convince Villa to do business, it would test the water with United perhaps willing to go higher in their bid to improve a regularly criticised back-line.
United desperately need quality central defenders, with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic yet to be replaced and the youngsters taking their place not always looking like the answer.
United have also been linked with Mats Hummels and Sergio Ramos but neither player is likely to leave midway through the current campaign.
Vlaar’s contract situation means he just might…if United make an acceptable bid, that is.
