Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has been speaking about his perfect five-a-side team.
The centre-back was talking to the club’s official website about all things training, and he became the latest United star to reveal who would make his perfect five-a-side line-up from his current teammates.
It was no surprise that he picked himself as the sole defender, but he left some very impressive talent out when filling the remaining four spots – opting for Angel Di Maria, Antonio Valencia, Wayne Rooney and James Wilson.
“I would have Di Maria in there,” Smalling said. “Angel would be in there and Antonio Valencia. Yeah, you’ve got me, Angel and Antonio. They can play wider and I would go with Wazza and Willo, for his pace, up top.”
So no Radamel Falcao, Robin van Persie or Juan Mata, then!
There is no doubt United have a vast array of talent at their disposal these days, but they are still lacking a box-to-box midfielder and an experienced centre-back or two to complete their line-up.
Smalling may have his eye on who arrives in the latter category this month, if anyone, because United’s defence has come in for criticism and manager Louis van Gaal is likely to strengthen it at the first available opportunity.
