On this day: Arsenal 'closed in' on Carvalho; Van Gaal wanted Tottenham job

On the 7th January 2014 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 7th January 2015, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 7th January 2014…

Closing on William

A year ago today and Arsenal were said to be closing in on the player they needed. They had long been said to need a new dynamic midfielder to finally take over the role of Patrick Vieira or Gilberto Silva and in William Carvalho they had found it.

It was reported that Arsenal were 'closing on' a deal for the midfielder.

Funny that, because a year down the line and still those same reports are floating out of Portugal and England. Will Carvalho ever come to Arsenal? Will he ever come to England?

Who knows?

LVG Tottenham

A year ago today and it was reported that then Dutch international coach Louis van Gaal wanted the Tottenham Hotspur job when his contract with the national team expired in the summer.

Van Gaal first wanted to lead Holland to World Cup glory, which he nearly did, in Brazil but was then keen on a move to Premier League football.

Once Tim Sherwood was told he would not be kept on at the end of the season those rumours grew stronger and stronger until...Manchester United came knocking.

Tottenham got Mauricio Pochettino in the end and that appointment now seems to be a shrewd one, so everyone's a winner.

Apart from Tim Sherwood.
