The LA Galaxy have confirmed that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will join the MLS club in July.

The LA Galaxy have announced that Steven Gerrard will join the MLS club as a Designated Player in July following the end of his Liverpool contract.

Gerrard, 34, revealed last Friday that he was preparing to end his 25-year association with Liverpool, having made over 600 appearances for the club in all competitions, as well as having served as their longest-serving captain since October 2003.

The former England skipper is now set to follow in the footsteps of ex-Three Lions teammate David Beckham in taking his talents to LA, and told the team's official website of his excitement at his impending move.

“I’m very excited to begin the next chapter of my career in the United States with LA Galaxy,” he said. “The Galaxy are the most successful club in Major League Soccer history and I am looking forward to competing for more championships in the years to come.

"My discussions with Bruce Arena and Chris Klein were extremely positive and the future of the team is very bright. I am committed to helping the LA Galaxy compete for trophies and to having an impact in Los Angeles and I will give my all for the club. In the meantime, I will continue to give everything for Liverpool for the remainder of this season before joining up with the Galaxy.”

His new head coach Bruce Arena added: "We’re very pleased to acquire a player of Steven’s caliber, experience and character. He is one of the most decorated players in the world and will join our team with a wealth of success playing at the highest level of the sport.

"Steven will be an excellent example to our young players and we’re excited to add him and his leadership to an already talented roster.”

Gerrard help guide Liverpool to seven major trophies during his time at Liverpool, including the UEFA Champions League [2005], UEFA Cup [2001],  FA Cup [2001, 2006] and League Cup [2001, 2003, 2012].

In the Galaxy, the midfielder will be joining the most successful franchise in MLS history, who have won a league-record five MLS Cup titles, including three over the past four seasons under current boss Arena.
