Jason Cundy believes that Raphael Varane would choose Chelsea over Manchester United if he was to leave Real Madrid this month.
France international Varane has been the subject of speculation in the British media in recent weeks, with reports claiming that Chelsea are interested in the defender.
The 21-year-old centre-back is struggling for playing time at Madrid at the moment, having made just eight appearances in La Liga so far this season.
Varane, who has worked with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho at Madrid, is one of the best young central defenders in the world and, naturally, he would want to play regularly.
Cundy, who played for Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur among other clubs in his career, has now given his take on the matter.
“Another player who would be great for the club is Raphael Varane,” the 45-year-old wrote in IBTimes UK. “There’s talk of him going to United for £20m and, at that price, I reckon Louis van Gaal would be ready to take on Mourinho for him.
“But think of it from the player's point of view: he knows Jose, knows how he operates, and Chelsea are a better team than United right now.
“Yes United are one of the biggest clubs in the world but, at the moment, Chelsea can 100% guarantee Champions League football, whereas Van Gaal's team aren't quite there yet. You've also got to think PSG and Manchester City will be in the mix, so it could become a real battle.”
Cundy’s argument is strong, but there is one factor he ignores: playing time.
The main reason why Varane’s future is under speculation is that he wants more playing time. The solid centre-back pairing of Pepe and Sergio Ramos at Madrid means that he cannot break into the team.
Chelsea have John Terry and Gary Cahill as their first-choice centre-backs, which means Varane is not guaranteed starts.
