Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has been speaking about the youngster who has impressed him most in training recently.
The England international was talking to United’s official website about what goes on in the build-up to match-day and was asked who the best player in training has been lately, and he gave an answer that could surprise many given the multi-million-pound talent at the club.
“I’d say James Wilson,” Smalling said. “He’s such a threat in terms of he’s always looking to run in behind.
“He is very quick and his finishing, while I wouldn’t say it’s surprised me, it’s just the consistency and how hard he strikes the ball and how well too.”
Wilson shot to prominence when he scored two goals on his United debut against Hull City last season, and when he was retained at the expense of both Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez, many expected him to quickly add to that tally.
That has not been the case so far, with Wilson failing to find the net in 11 United appearances, but Smalling believes that should soon change.
“He’s been very good for a lot of this season in training and I think it’s only a matter of time before we really see him make a big impact,” the defender added.
It should be remembered that Wilson is still only 19 and given his reputation, his previous form at younger levels and his innate talent, he should go on to become a great United goal-scorer over time.
