Darren Anderton believes that Tottenham Hotspur fans should be optimistic of a successful second half of the season.
Tottenham are currently just two points behind fourth-placed Southampton in fifth and are on a seven-game unbeaten run.
The North London outfit are also doing well in cup competitions, having reached the last 32 of the Europa League and the semi-finals of the League Cup, while they have an FA Cup third-round replay against Burnley to come next week.
Former Spurs star Anderton is confident that Mauricio Pochettino’s side are on course for a successful season and explains his reasons for optimism.
“Their points tally and their position in the Barclays Premier League puts them not far off fourth place which is where they want to be,” the 42-year-old told PremierLeague.com.
“They are still in the Europa League and they have got a great draw in the Capital One Cup semi-final against Sheffield United, which is a great opportunity to get to the final. And that’s all without really playing as well as they can. So things will get better in the second half of the season.
“Spurs are set up really nicely for the second half of the season without having performed to our best, save for one or two matches. Away from home they've had some really good results.
“The fitness of the Spurs team is starting to come through. Pochettino likes his teams super-fit and that is starting to show with some strong second-half performances and that bodes well for the coming months.
“To be still in the cup competitions and in a very nice position in the Premier League as well means that the second half of the season could prove very exciting.”
Indeed, “exciting” times lay ahead for Tottenham, who could well end up winning a trophy or two.
However, it is crucial for the Spurs not to get carried away. There is a long way to go in the season, and things could change pretty fast.
Spurs need to take it game by game and not look too far ahead.
