Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has suggested that a figure of £4 million should be enough for his former club to land Winston Reid of West Ham before the end of the transfer window.
West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has already said that he doesn’t think Reid is going to be playing for the Hammers next season, with Liverpool and Arsenal the two sides tipped to try and sign him.
“Look £4 million for Reid… Do I think they’d accept that? Yes I do,” said Thompson as a guest on Sky Sports News.
Liverpool spent big to improve their defence last summer, but there’s still a question mark hanging over the head of Dejan Lovren while Mamadou Sakho has only just started to find his best form in Reds colours.
The arrival of Reid could be positive for a number of reasons, with the main one refreshing the options Rodgers has in the middle of his back four for the rest of the campaign.
It would also be a signal that despite some inconsistency this season, Liverpool still have pulling power in terms of being able to attract some of the best talent inside the Premier League.
A fee of £4 million wouldn’t cause Liverpool too much grief financially and could see them net a player who was rated at around the £20 million mark by Sam Allardyce at the back end of last year.
West Ham could hold out for a higher fee but with time running out with regards to Reid’s contract, Liverpool can play on that and get themselves a bargain in the process.
