‘Selfish’ Manchester United target Gareth Bale criticised at Real Madrid

The Welshman has been singled out in the Spanish press for a poor performance in the defeat to Valencia at the weekend.

Real Madrid’s winning streak of 22 games in all competitions came to a sudden halt at the weekend as the European champions were beaten 2-1 at the Mestalla by Valencia.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men put in a tame performance in their first game of 2015, with their usual potent attack struggling to crack a stubborn home rearguard.

Arguably Madrid’s best chance to score int he second half fell to former Tottenham winger Gareth Bale, who charged through one-on-one with Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves.

With Nicolas Otamendi chasing and putting in a last-ditch tackle, Bale spurned a golden opportunity to score or centre the ball to the free Karim Benzema on the penalty spot.

Marca have accused Bale of a ‘selfish’ showing at the Mestalla while also insinuating that the world’s most expensive player drove his team-mates ‘potty’ with his inability to work as part of the collective.

The Wales international’s future has been a major point of contention of late, with Manchester United thought to be readying a considerable bid to bring the star back to the Premier League.

The report does state that Bale was not the only player at fault in the defeat and that it was a bad day at the office for all concerned.
