Liverpool: Adam Lallana’s injury can allow Lazar Markovic to shine

The England international will be on the sidelines for around a month, in which time the Serb could play in a more advanced role.

Liverpool progressed through to the next round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon last night, but the Reds suffered an injury blow to Adam Lallana.

The England international picked up a calf injury in the clash and is now likely to miss the next month of action for the Merseyside outfit.

It is bad timing for the former Southampton star, who has been in improved form recently and is starting to show why Liverpool brought him to Anfield.

However, despite the personal blow for Lallana, his absence could well allow another promising summer signing the chance to take centrestage.

Brendan Rodgers has been deploying Lallana alongside Phillippe Coutinho in the Reds’ bespoke 3-4-3 system, while Lazar Markovic has been used as a wing-back in the formation or on the bench.

With Lallana now unavailable, if the Northern Irish manager wants to continue using the system he would be advised to change the Serbian midfielder’s position in it.

Markovic has shown glimpses of his ability since a big-money move from Benfica in the summer, but his defensive prowess and positioning leaves something to be desired at times.

As such, deploying the eastern European schemer alongside Coutinho in the side’s attack will give the Serb more of a creative reign and allow him to express himself in the final third.

Markovic has all the abilities to be a real star for Liverpool but the feeling is that he is being used out of position.

In Lallana’s absence, he could well be given a chance to prove himself to the Kop and stamp down a more natural attacking position in the team.
