Fulham loanee Matt Smith scored four goals for Bristol City.
As loan moves go, Bristol City's decision to bring in Matt Smith couldn't have worked much better for club or player.
Smith had endured a frustrating season, sold by Leeds United on deadline day to Fulham, where he quickly became a forgotten man.
Sent off on his debut, Smith barely played and was sent on loan to the League One side in late November.
After a run of goals at the end of the year, Smith produced a sensational performance in the Football League Trophy clash against Gillingham, scoring four times in a 4-2 victory.
Former Leeds United teammate Stephen Warnock acknowledged his feats via Twitter, sending a message of congratulations.
well done @mattjpsmith 4 goals tonight. Delighted for you! On— Stephen Warnock (@StephenWarnock3) January 6, 2015
Smith has never been a prolific goalscorer, and four goals against Gillingham doesn't automatically mean Leeds were wrong to let him go - but his exploits throw the question out there for debate.
His four goals is the same number as Leeds have managed to score as a team in their past seven games.
