Crystal Palace confirmed this week they have released striker Andy Johnson.
Crystal Palace announced yesterday they have released striker Andy Johnson.
The forward signed on a short-term deal in the summer when he was a free agent, a surprise addition by former manager Neil Warnock.
New boss Alan Pardew clearly felt Johnson was not likely to figure in his plans, and sanctioned the striker's departure.
The 33-year-old made only one appearance for Palace since rejoining, as a substitute in a Capital One Cup defeat to Newcastle United.
While that return was a moment to savour, it was so out of nostalgia owing to his previously success at the club which saw him lead them to promotion in 2003/0 and perform so strongly in his Premier League campaign.
For Johnson to be resigned by a Premier League club was huge for him, after recovering from a serious knee injury sustained at QPR.
Now without a club, Johnson can begin his search for a new side with the confidence Palace took him on. That will make a big difference to his prospects which had seemed sparse in the summer, but he will likely have to drop down the divisions.
Having barely played over the last year, Johnson can be expected to resurface in the Championship or League One later during the transfer window.
Here's a look at how Palace fans reacted to the news of his release via Twitter...

'Andy Johnson has left Crystal Palace" Let's be honest, that statement hurt a lot more in 2006.... #cpfc— Matthew Watts (@theDiablo_96) January 6, 2015
