The Argentina international missed an open-air training session that was attended by thousands of Barcelona’s young fans.
Lionel Messi has apologised for missing an open-air Barcelona training session that was attended by 11,000 of the club’s young fans.
The Camp Nou club hold a similar session every year that is eagerly anticipated by the Blaugrana followers, especially given that the Catalan club usually train behind closed doors.
The 2015 event was held on Monday morning, but Messi was absent due to gastroenteritis, according to Marca.
The South American star was quick to apologise for his absence however and wished the supporters the best of luck for the year.
"I would have liked to have taken part in the Christmas training session. I've never missed it before, but you can't control these types of setbacks. I hope every kid's wishes come true”, he said.
Messi has recently returned to Spain after his festive break and was only fit enough for the Barcelona bench in the side’s 1-0 shock defeat to David Moyes’ Real Sociedad at the weekend.
The Argentine is up against arch rival Cristiano Ronaldo and World Cup winning goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for the Ballon d’Or, with the winner set to be decided on January 15 at a ceremony in Zurich.
