The Coupe de France doesn’t get much attention in England, but fans of Tottenham Hotspur and Everton may have tuned in last night as Paris Saint-Germain took on Montpellier. Both Adrien Rabiot and Clement Chantome started for the Ligue 1 champions as they became the final team to make it through to the last 32.
The game was played at Montpellier Rugby’s Stade Altrad and at times it looked more like a Heineken Cup tie rather than a game between two Ligue 1 sides.
Laurent Blanc made some changes going into the cup tie. Without Ezequiel Lavezzi through suspension, he also dropped Edinson Cavani due to the Uruguayan international’s failure to show for the club's Moroccan training camp.
Both Premier League targets, Rabiot and Chantome, started in PSG’s midfield diamond and it was the latter that opened the scoring on Monday night.
It wasn’t the prettiest of goals, but the midfielder was in the right place at the right time to score his first goal in nine months. The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Everton this month, with Lille and Bordeaux also known to be interested in acquiring his services.
Rabiot has also been linked with a move away from the Parc des Princes this window, with radio station RMC reporting that a six-month loan deal with Spurs has been agreed, but the London club wouldn’t have an option to buy the 19-year-old in the summer.
It seems that the France Under-20 international would be short-term cover for Nabil Bentaleb as he goes off to play in the African Cup of Nations.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic made it 2-0 and put the game out of sight when he turned in Javier Pastore’s fortunate cross. Brazilian Lucas Moura sealed the win late on and PSG will play Bordeaux at the Stade Chaban Delmas in the next round.
Rumours persist that Rabiot, Chantome and Yohan Cabaye will all leave PSG this winter, but there is no way, with the form of Thiago Motta continuing to drop, that the Parisians will let all three go this January.
