£3m for Delph? Why it's the best deal Spurs could do this year

Tottenham Hotspur have been tipped to pay £3 million for Fabian Delph this month.

The Mirror has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur will target Aston Villa star Fabian Delph as they look to sign the England international before the end of the month.

Villa seem set to lose the midfielder, with his contract due to expire at the end of the season, with Tottenham tipped to make a £3 million offer to take him to White Hart Lane.

It could be the best £3 million that Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy have ever spent.

Central midfield is not an area where Tottenham are short on options so it’s difficult to try and judge why they would want to add another player in an area which is already very competitive.

Delph has proved at Aston Villa, and England, that he’s far more versatile than many give him credit for.

Tottenham have a variety of midfielders who can play defensive and attacking roles, but they don’t have a player who can marry the qualities together in the same way as Delph.

With Paulinho tipped to leave Spurs before the end of the month, Delph coming in gives Pochettino a feisty option going forward as well as someone who can defend like his life depends on it at the back.

Delph is also an experienced and refined Premier League player.

His form for villa saw him get a shot in the England senior side and he impressed alongside some very good players in the victory away in Switzerland last year.

He also offers the club the option of being able to use him in Europe, which is rare for many players moving from one club to another in the middle of a season.

This is a deal which won’t give Daniel Levy a heart attack in terms of the fee being paid and the personal terms Delph’s representatives are likely to demand from Tottenham.

It’s a no brainer for all parties. Villa get a fee they can’t turn down and Spurs get a player who could be crucial for them over the second half of the season.
