Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has thanked Rafael da Silva for his bravery.
The Brazilian suffered a fractured cheek against Yeovil Town in the FA Cup win, but was able to carry on before eventually being substituted.
As a result the team were not immediately impacted and Van Gaal had time to consider his next change rather than making an instant decision.
He told ManUtd.com: "Rafael had a fresh injury so it was fantastic that he had the guts to play through.
"He has a fantastic mentality, it's unbelievable."
United's victory was at a cost, with Rafael and Luke Shaw both injured, while Paddy McNair had to be treated on the field for a head injury.
Rafael's willingness to battle on suggests he may be able to continue to play a role this month, even if he has to wear a protective mask.
With the club running out of fit defenders, the obvious alternative is of course for the club to become active in the transfer market sooner rather than later...
