Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera returned to first-team action in impressive fashion as he fired United’s opener in the 2-0 FA Cup win over Yeovil.
The Spaniard has missed a fair chunk of this season through a succession of niggling injuries and a subsequent lack of match fitness.
After picking up another strain in the 3-0 victory over Liverpool in mid-December, the 25-year-old managed just 26 minutes' worth of action over the festive period.
Boss Louis van Gaal has mentioned on more than one occasion that he will only select his players when fully fit, therefore Herrera’s return to the team at Yeovil may have come as a surprise.
Nonetheless, his impact certainly warranted the selection as the former Zaragoza youngster fired in a wonderful second-half volley to set United on their way to a 2-0 victory.
His goal, seemingly watched by United’s huge support around the world, even drew plaudits from Germany and one of the Bundesliga’s most renowned stars.
Taking to Twitter in a bid to share his appreciation with his friend, former Athletic Bilbao teammate and now Bayern Munich ace Javi Martinez wrote Herrera a message, saying: “What a goal bro!”
In truth, the goal was deserving of such acclaim from a fellow world-class professional and it will likely be in contention for FA Cup Goal of the Season.
In finding the back of the net, Herrera managed to write his name in the history books by becoming United’s first Spaniard to score in the FA Cup.
