Italian newspaper TMW claims Tottenham Hotspur are trying to close out a deal for Rennes forward Paul-Georges Ntep.
The 22-year-old is being tipped to link up with Spurs ahead of the second half of the season, as Mauricio Pochettino considers ways to bolster his attacking options and give himself some different choices.
Ntep doesn’t represent the high profile and big money arrival that several fans will be hoping for but he can do a job for Spurs and fits the bill in many ways.
He’s similar to another reported target of the club, West Brom’s Saido Berahino, in many ways and also has experience of playing under-21 football with the French national team.
One of the biggest pulling factors in terms of going after Berahino was his England under-21 relationship with Harry Kane, but Ntep is a player that Kane is likely to have come up against in youth team international football.
That will give him an idea of how he plays, which he can relay to the manager and also use to his own advantage should the pair be named in the same side in the future.
Kane’s progression and importance to the first team has also changed the situation.
Spurs have the ability to go after some big name players, but it would be remarkable if Pochettino signed a forward who would push Kane down the pecking order considering how important he’s become for the Argentine.
Ntep is not a player who would slot straight into the Tottenham first team and therefore, represents the ideal sort of back up striker to come in and support Kane and the other creative players in the squad.
The problem Tottenham face if Pochettino is serious about getting his hands on the forward is that other sides, Stoke, are also reportedly interested in him, arguably in a better position to offer him regular playing time.
In terms of back up strikers, he ticks all of the right boxes and depending on the fee, has to be worth a gamble.
