On this day: Wenger's new role at Arsenal, Leeds' FA Cup shock

Arsene Wenger Casual

News stories about Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United all feature.

The third round of the FA Cup is nearly over, with the draw for the fourth round taking place before the games this evening.

The Premier League’s big boys have made it through, while other sides all over the Football League are now free to concentrate on their league campaigns.

We’ve taken a look back at some of the stories making the headlines on this day last year.

‘Wenger tipped for double role at Arsenal’

The Mirror gave a very clear and precise outlook over the reported plan for Arsene Wenger’s future at Arsenal.

It was around this time last year that speculation started to build over Wenger’s future, with the Mirror tipping him to sign a two year deal before becoming a ‘transfer troubleshooter and talent spotter.’

Wenger went on to sign a new three year deal, which may turn out to be his last with the club.

‘Leeds sent crashing out’

Leeds United suffered a similar fate in the FA Cup last season, as they did this season.

Leeds were beaten 2-0 by League Two side Rochdale in one of the shock results of the third round of the FA Cup last season.

Leeds were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland over the weekend in the third round of the competition this season.

‘Eriksen handed Danish award’

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen was handed the Danish player of the year award for 2013.

Eriksen enjoyed a fine first few months of his Tottenham Hotspur career having joined the club from Dutch giants Ajax.

“It’s a big thing, a real honour to win this award from my fellow professionals. It's a proud moment for me,” he said.
