Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has revealed that Fernando Torres always had plans to return to Atletico Madrid.
Torres has gone back to his former club on a loan deal from Italian outfit AC Milan, having finally left Chelsea on a permanent basis.
The Spain international was on the books of Atletico from 1995 until 2007, when he joined Liverpool for whom he was a huge success
Having failed to reach those lofty heights at Chelsea, Torres moved to Milan on a two-year loan deal in the summer transfer window.
Last month the loan deal with Milan was permanent, and the Italian giants then sent him to Atletico for the rest of the season.
Mata, who played with Torres at Chelsea, has said that he is happy for his Spain teammate and wrote on his blog: “Atletico won on Saturday, although the biggest news for them has been the signing of Fernando Torres.
“I’m very happy for him. He was always talking about coming back one day and he is enjoying this moment a lot. He deserves it. His unveiling at Atlético was amazing. I hope he enjoys it and scores many goals at ‘his home’.”
Torres has been off the boil for over three years and one should not expect much from him at Atletico.
However, given the fact that he is genuinely loved by the Atletico fans, the 30-year-old will certainly be motivated more than ever before.
Perhaps that could bring back some of the old spark.
