De Jong is currently plying his trade with AC Milan in Serie A, having transferred to Italy from Manchester City three seasons ago.
The Dutch international’s contract expires over the summer, and reports in Italy have suggested that the Rossoneri are keen to cash in on the 30-year-old whilst interest remains in him. Premier League side Manchester United are said to be keen on the midfielder, being a favourite of current Red Devils head coach Louis van Gaal. Having been chosen by van Gaal for inclusion in the Netherlands squad for the 2014 World Cup, the former Ajax man has been shortlisted as a potential fix for the midfield woes currently being endured by United, and the club could be looking to make a move for De Jong as soon as possible.
Although previous reports have indicated that he is up for sale, Milan head coach Filippo Inzaghi has no intention of seeing De Jong leave the San Siro this month, and he is quoted as saying that he hopes to see him commit his future to the Rossoneri in the coming weeks.
“I hope we do not lose Nigel De Jong and I think we can work it out with him regarding a new contract,” the former Milan striker said.
This news will likely deal a blow to United, who had hoped to have the transfer wrapped up with De Jong said to be available and on the market. He would have been a perfect signing for van Gaal, with his experience and knowledge of the coach’s system allowing him to fit right into the squad, and help the club as they transition to title challengers under the Dutchman’s management.
