Steve McClaren has confirmed that former Chelsea trainee Isak Ssewankambo is returning to English football at Derby County.
The Sweden U21 international was released by the Blues over the summer, freeing him to link up with Eredeivisie side NAC Breda.
It has not taken him long to catch the eye of those he left behind, with the Rams moving quickly to bring him back to Britain.
A deal has been put in place, on the advice of the Championship club’s coaching staff, and McClaren is looking forward to getting to work with an ‘interesting’ acquisition,
He said in the Derby Telegraph: “We have done a deal about to sign him.
"He's an interesting one that (head of football operations) Chris Evans and his scouts have been looking at.
"We've had him over for a few days and he has impressed. He is 18, he has been playing first team in the Holland and will have to come in and show us what he can do."
Derby must have seen enough from the youngster to suggest that he is capable of making a positive impact in the second-tier and beyond.
The Rams are pushing hard for a return to the Premier League and will be looking to make long-term additions.
Ssewankambo failed to make a senior appearance for Chelsea, but he was a regular at NAC and is a key part of his nation’s U21 set-up as a versatile performer who is capable of operating in defence or midfield.
