Liverpool morning news: Youngster nearing new deal; Gerrard replacement must be star quality

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Liverpool

Liverpool are reportedly confident that Raheem Sterling will sign a new contract at the club, which will be a huge boost so soon after the announcement that Steven Gerrard is heading for pastures new.

The Telegraph reports that Sterling is set to sign a new five-year contract by the end of January, which will ensure he is tied to the club until 2020.

If the news proves true it is great for Liverpool and their fans, with the young England international tipped to become one of the best players in Europe in time.

And if he does pen a new deal, the next big task will be to replace Gerrard.

That leads us on to the Guardian’s report that Brendan Rodgers knows there is only one way to replace the departing captain, and that is with a ready-made star.

Some have suggested Liverpool should promote from within but the simple fact is Gerrard is a player the Reds will never replace like-for-like and they must bring in a superstar who can carry the burden of responsibility from the outset.
