Arsenal were poor during their recent 2-0 loss at Southampton.
Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker says that his side will not give up in the quest to overcome their defensive troubles and surge up the league table.
The Gunners have been blighted by injuries this season resulting in a number of inconsistent performances and unwanted results.
This time last season, Arsene Wenger’s men were in the midst of an injury crisis although they had already accumulated enough points to comfortably hold out for a top four spot.
The same cannot be said for this campaign, however, as the North London club lie in sixth spot having entered the New Year with a defeat at fellow top four challengers Southampton.
Despite their ongoing problems, under-fire centre-back Mertesacker remains in positive mood as he tells reporters how the North Londoners vow to bounce back and overcome their defensive woes.
“We have suffered. We’ve been through it all season, so it is nothing new,” the German explains to The Sun.
“At one point you want to be consistent in your line-up, especially the back four. We haven’t had that this season and have to find that.”
“It’s difficult for us at the moment. What keeps us going is our spirit and our belief in our squad, even though we have suffered a lot of injuries.”
“We will bounce back and will never give up, no matter what happens.”
The Gunners host Hull City on Sunday in a repeat of the FA Cup final last season, a game in which Wenger’s side won 3-2 despite falling two goals behind early on.
It remains to be seen how serious the French boss takes the cup given his side’s precarious league position though an exciting cup run could certainly help get the fans back on his side.
