Arsenal have received a welcome boost in their bid to sign Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira as transfer rivals Bayern Munich have completed a deal of their own.
The Bundesliga champions have been strongly linked with making a move for the German midfielder as his contract in Madrid nears its summer expiration date.
Over the past week, Spanish publication Marca even went as far as to suggest that a deal to take Khedira to Bayern might have already been agreed in principal.
While the paper may have caught wind of a new Bayern transfer involving a German defensive midfielder, they seemingly got the player wrong as it is Joshua Kimmich who has agreed to join the Bavarians.
"The 19-year-old has signed a contract with the record German champions until 2020 and is reported to be the player wanted most by Bayern coach Pep Guardiola for next season," Sky Sports claims.
The Stuttgart man is to join Pep Guardiola’s side at the end of the season and his move could give the Gunners a clear run at signing long-term target Khedira.
Many observers have stated that the North Londoners’ shortcomings lie in midfield and a new tough tackler is the player which could help them close the gap on Premier League rivals Chelsea.
Khedira, 27, offers experience, quality on the ball, much-needed aggression and exceptional positional sense – all the attributes boss Arsene Wenger craves in his faltering side.
With his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu coming to an end and still no sign of a new deal on the horizon, the Gunners may not have a better opportunity to conclude a deal.
Khedira is said to be keen on remaining with Carlo Ancelotti’s team, but the opportunity for long-term stability and the chance to join the North Londoners' German contingent surely represents a sound option.
Over to you Monsieur Wenger.
