The Spanish midfielder is pleased to be plying his trade alongside the England captain.
Manchester United have certainly turned a corner since the arrival of Louis van Gaal in place of David Moyes as Manchester United manager. They currently sit third in the Premier League table, behind rivals Chelsea and Manchester City in the race for the title.
The reasons for their success are plentiful. A more astute manager, better implementation of star players as well as excellent summer signings.
Rooney is the club captain now and has been reverted to a much deeper midfield role this season. Effectively he is keeping Herrera, a £28 million arrival from Athletic Bilbao, out of the team at the moment - but he still looks a great purchase for the future.
This week Herrera has been speaking to United Uncovered about his five favourite Manchester United players of all time. He mentioned the likes of his current assistant Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo - but it was Rooney that got the most special mention.
"I feel lucky to be able to play with Wayne. He is one of the best players in the world. He is so competitive in every game, it doesn’t what the game is, he always wants to win. When you see Wayne from outside the club, you might think he is a like superstar and he is but he is also someone who always wants to help you. I talk to him a lot and he is always there to help me. He is our captain and I’m proud of him because he is achieving lots of records for his club and country."
Now if he could just get back to playing up front again, maybe Herrera could get a game.
