Heerenveen defender Joost van Aken is in awe of Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen and Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos.

Heerenveen defender Joost van Aken has named Tottenham Hotspur star Jan Vertonghen as one of his idols.

“I’m a defender, but there was a time when I didn’t enjoy watching defenders,” InsideFulbol.com quotes him as telling Voetbal International. “Sergio Ramos is one of my idols. And when he played for Ajax, I loved to watch Jan Vertonghen.”

Van Aken is 20 years of age and is rated as one of the more promising young centre-backs in the Eredivisie.

The Netherlands Under-21 international has been tipped for success in the future, and he seems to have chosen his idols well.

Vertonghen is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, while Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos is easily one of the top three in that position in the world.

Van Aken has a long way to go before establishing himself among the best in Europe, but he does not lack in ambition.

“Playing for the Dutch national team is my dream,” said the youngster. “I also want to play in a beautiful foreign league in the future.

“The Bundesliga and La Liga are my favourites. In England I wouldn’t fit in as well because of the physical nature of the game.”
