Bold prediction: Gerrard signs on loan for Chelsea in January 2016, wins title?

Steven Gerrard takes a question during a pregame press conference

Predicting into the future. Could Chelsea 'do a Lampard' and loan Liverpool legend from MLS?

Steven Gerrard's announcement he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season is still being digested by fans of the club.

The club captain declared he feels the time is right to move on, and is strongly linked with a move across the Atlantic to play in Major League Soccer.

As we all know, making such a move allows potential for loan switches, just ask David Beckham who joined PSG, or Everton who made use of Landon Donovan twice. Arsenal even re-signed Thierry Henry for a short period.

So could Gerrard make a short return to the Premier League? Liverpool would love him back after a short period without him, but an instant return may not make much sense.

It did not for Frank Lampard who stunned the football world by joining his former side Chelsea's title rivals Manchester City.

Circumstances of ownership with his MLS side New York City helped make that move possible, but a fleeting Gerrard move would certainly be possible if the midfielder covets it.

With Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho unafraid to make a bold statement in the transfer market - who could put such an attempt to lure Gerrard to Stamford Bridge?

He famously tried a decade earlier, with Gerrard agonising over a move. Nobody could have foreseen Cesc Fabregas playing for Chelsea or Lampard for City, and in modern day football nothing can be ruled out.

If you think Gerrard won't be tempted again, it's worth reconsidering. Chelsea can pitch to Gerrard the chance to achieve what he never did at Liverpool - win the Premier League title and scratch the major itch on his CV.

Mourinho will see Lampard's impact at City this year and see a chance to replicate the same surprise impact, and with players like Eden Hazard and Diego Costa to play alongside, even a mid-30s Gerrard could flourish.
