Jamie Carragher on Steven Gerrard
Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool will never have another world-class player who will devote their entire career to the club.
Former England international Steven Gerrard announced earlier today that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.
The 34-year-old midfielder has been at Anfield his entire career, and Carragher says that the club should have done more to keep hold of him.
“Steven is not someone who would be comfortable just sitting on the bench and, in that sense, he has made the right decision,” Carragher wrote in The Daily Mail.
“Still, I cannot help feeling Liverpool’s hierarchy should have done more to ensure he remained at Anfield. Surely they could have come up with an arrangement that would have benefited all parties in the short and long term?”
“You have to remember also that Steven stayed loyal to Liverpool for five years while they were out of the Champions League, even when he was being courted by potential winners of that tournament such as Real Madrid,” added Carragher.
“No other player with his talent would have done that. Will there ever be another world-class player who devotes his entire career to Liverpool? No.”
Jamie Redknapp on Steven Gerrard
Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes that the Merseyside outfit will struggle to find a replacement for Gerrard.
“The difficulty for Liverpool now will be how to replace Gerrard,” he told Sky Sports. “I’ve lost count of how many people at Liverpool have said to me, ‘we’ve got the next Steven Gerrard coming through’. I’m still waiting.
“I’ve not seen anyone who could come anywhere near him. To go and find the next Gerrard is virtually impossible. He has been the mainstay, the one player that no matter what happened has always performed at such a high level.”
Current Liverpool players on Steven Gerrard
Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has admitted that Gerrard’s decision to leave came a shock to him and his teammates.
“We've seen stuff in the newspapers on whether he will renew his contract but everyone thought it would be done," Henderson told BBC Sport. "But it was a big shock to see that he will be leaving. No one had a clue.”
Below are what some of the other Liverpool players have been saying about Gerrard.
