Liverpool have confirmed that captain Steven Gerrard will not be renewing his contract with the club beyond this season.
Rumours started to break yesterday that Gerrard was going to take a move to the MLS at the end of the season and while his next club is to be confirmed, all parties have announced the official news this morning.
It will leave Brendan Rodgers with a huge hole to fill in terms of his midfield for next season, with Gerrard one of the best quality players in Liverpool’s squad and also priceless in terms of his leadership skills.
“This has been the toughest decision of my life and one which both me and my family have agonised over for a good deal of time,” he told the club’s website.
“Liverpool Football Club has been such a huge part of all our lives for so long and saying goodbye is going to be difficult, but I feel it's something that's in the best interests of all involved, including my family and the club itself.”
Gerrard leaves with his reputation at the club in tact and his popularity with fans positive.
Gerrard had the opportunity to leave Liverpool at the start of the Roman Abramovich era at Chelsea, but he showed immense loyalty in turning down the chance to move to West London.
Gerrard has reiterated his commitment to the cause for the rest of the season and fingers crossed, he’ll be able to leave the Reds in a good state with some silverware in the trophy cabinet.
Here’s what Liverpool fans on Twitter have had to say about Gerrard’s decision to call time on his Anfield career.
