Jamie Carragher reacts to huge Steven Gerrard news, Lineker also pays tribute

The Liverpool captain is said to be leaving the Reds at the end of the season.

According to reports from a wide range of sources, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will leave Anfield at the end of the current season.

Gerrard is said to prefer a move to an MLS club and is expected to formally announce his decision today.

What a sad day for Liverpool Football Club and, as former defender Jamie Carragher thinks, what a sad day for English football as a whole.

Gerrard has been a loyal servant for Liverpool over a long, memorable career. His on-field influence appears to have waned in recent times, however, and many feel it is the right time for the 34-year-old to call time on a magnificent tenure at Anfield.

Despite his recent misfortune on the pitch, both Carragher and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker have paid tribute to the Reds skipper on Twitter.

It will be almost unfathomable to think of Liverpool without Gerrard - but that is a reality it seems the Anfield giants will have to come to terms with. All good things must come to an end, even if they aren't in the most ideal of circumstances.
