Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Garth Crooks has admitted his surprise that Southampton are above Arsenal in the Premier League.
After 20 rounds of matches in the English top flight, the Saints find themselves fourth with 36 points, three points above sixth-placed Arsenal.
Southampton actually defeated Arsenal 2-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium on New Year’s Day and are looking serious contenders for a top-four finish.
“I still find it hard to believe that we have started the new year and Southampton are above Arsenal and fourth in the table,” Crooks told BBC Sport. “I wonder what Lawrie McMenemy is making of all this.”
Many are still not convinced that Southampton can finish in the top four. Arsenal always get there, while Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are starting to gain some momentum.
Ronald Koeman’s side, though, will be determined to prove their doubters wrongs. If they continue to pick up the points, then they could well finish fourth in the Premier League this season.
