Edinson Cavani's position at Paris Saint-Germain has deteriorated further after the striker returned late to the club following his unexplained absence.
The summer transfer window was full of rumours linking Edinson Cavani with a move to Manchester United, Manchester City or Arsenal. It was never really an option that the Uruguayan striker would leave Paris, and the rumour was nothing more than click-bait from the English media.
Five months on and the situation has completely changed. With the right bid, PSG would be willing to sell, and on Friday morning the relationship between Cavani and his club took another turn for the worse.
Cavani failed to join his Parisian teammates in Marrakech for their winter training session and subsequent friendly with Inter Milan. Some reports suggest that it was pre-arranged with Laurent Blanc and the club, but the continuing rumours and stories suggest this is far from the truth and now local newspaper Le Parisien suggests the situation has developed further.
Regardless of why he wasn’t with the club in Morocco, Cavani was ordered to join his teammates at their training session on Friday. However, the striker has yet to arrive back in Paris, with his plane not set to arrive until Friday morning.
This is not the ideal preparation for Monday’s Coupe de France tie against Montpellier and almost certainly rules out any chance Cavani will play.
Whatever the reason for his absence or whether or not the move was sanctioned, returning late does not help Cavani look like a player showing dedication to the cause.
If any of the pre-mentioned English clubs are serious in making a move for the former Napoli striker, this would be the best chance they have of convincing PSG to part company with him. Receiving around £30 million for a misfiring forward, plus taking him off the wage bill would give Blanc options in January.
Cavani has scored 13 goals in all competitions this season, but there have been spells when he looked way off the pace. His excellent run of form in November helps his record look respectable. However, in the last three games, when PSG have needed help and inspiration, Cavani has been missing in action. That absence could easily be made permanent during the transfer window.
