Belgian international Witsel is the imperious midfield type Arsenal need.
Arsene Wenger has already admitted that the club is likely to be active in the January transfer window and with good reason. They need to strengthen in several positions, including at the back.
But one area that has been crying out for improvement for years has been the Arsenal midfield.
The likes of Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey are not reliable enough to be counted on injury wise. Mathieu Flamini is not of the quality needed, neither is Mikel Arteta, if Arsenal fans are being honest.
They need a dynamic box-to-box midfielder so who should they approach?
They are being linked with Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho. But to spend £25 million on an unproven player seems a risky game to play.
Instead, they should be looking at the signature of Zenit St-Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel.
Witsel joined the Russian side in 2012 for a massive fee of £32.5 million, but with a good reason.
He is just 25-years-old and a magnificent player capable of doing the dirty work at the back, and flying forward into the attack as well.
Zenit will not sell him for cheap however Andre Villas-Boas recently admitted the club is struggling for money due to the crash of the rouble and Financial Fair Play regulations.
Arsenal need to bring in a top quality midfield operator, not a stop-gap or an option for the future. A player of Witsel's ilk is exactly what they need.
