Martin Demichelis would probably admit that he did not take immediately to life in the Premier League.
He also endured a couple of tough evenings in Champions League competition as doubts were raised as to his value at Manchester City.
He was, however, to emerge as a key performer during the title run-in last term and earned himself a shock recall to the Argentina squad ahead of the 2014 World Cup.
That was just reward for his efforts, with his experience and no-nonsense approach now vital to the City cause.
Big money may have been spent on Eliaquim Mangala over the summer, placing further doubt over his involvement, but the Opta statistics for this season suggest that Demichelis remains the perfect partner for club captain Vincent Kompany at centre-half.

Demichelis would appear to be catching the eye of the right people, with Manuel Pellegrini expressing a desire to see his contract extended past the end of the current campaign.
He said: “He will finish his contract at the end of the season. I think he’s a very important player for us and I hope that he will soon start his talks about a new contract, and that they will conclude in the right way.”
The South American defender is now 34 years of age and is approaching the end of his career.
However, for as long as he is capable of doing at a job at the highest level, he would be advised to squeeze as much as possible out of his playing days.
He appears to be happy at the Etihad Stadium and, with City eager for him to stay on, you get the feeling that extension discussions will not last that long.
